Recognizing Halloween at EHS

Halloween is often an exciting time for young children that take part in dressing up and trick or treating in the evening. It can be a fun opportunity for children to share a bit of their personality to wear their costumes at school, however, at the risk of sounding like the “fun police”, our primary purpose is learning.

On Tuesday, October 31, if your child is invited to wear their costume at school for the morning. (PM Kindergarten children are obviously welcome to wear their costume during their regular classes) We please ask that all costumes are appropriate for an elementary school setting, including no masks in order for learners to learn and for us to see faces, and no violent themed costumes, accessories or weapons. Children will need to be able to take off their costumes at lunchtime and store them with their school bag.

We also ask that you do not send any treats to school for handing out to other students, and please ask in the school days after Halloween you please limit the number of treats that are sent to school - increased sugar does not usually equal optimal school working conditions!

Thank you in advance for your support and we hope all families that head out trick or treating have a safe, fun time!

Our Week:

Literacy:  Ask your child about The Wild Robot read aloud

Math: Mrs. Pelton continues to work with the grade 1's on skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's to 20.  By skip counting, they are creating groups to count.  Ms. Disher's grade 2 math group is using coins to skip count to 100 and beyond.  We are currently working on counting by quarters/25 and learning to skip count in new ways.  For example, you don't always have to count by 2's starting at 2-try skip counting by 2's starting at 3.

Writing: Both groups are working on writing stamina-working on writing the whole time and starting right away.  We continue to work on how to plan our ideas using pictures.  For example, planning out our ideas using 4 pictures or 1 big picture.

Reading:  We have started some guided reading groups to work on reading in addition to our daily literacy groups where we work on phonics and phonemic awareness.  Both groups are participating in a class read aloud of The Wild Robot.  Ask your child what has happened so far and who the main character is.  We did a guided drawing yesterday of the main character, Roz.

Have a fantastic weekend!

 Friday October 6th

Important Dates/Information:

-No School Monday October 9th (Thanksgiving)

-No School Friday October 20th (PD Day)

-Google Classroom:  A paper was sent home earlier this week with your child's educbe email on it.  We asked the kids if they knew their passwords already (from last year).  If they did (mostly the grade 2), then we did not reset it.  All kids in grade 2 who did not recall their passwords from last year, they were reset along with all the grade one passwords.  The reset password is on the paper that went home on Monday.  Thank you for your patience as we are trying to respond to emails from parents in regards to issues you are having logging in.  Some tips: make sure the password and usernames are entered in correctly (email addresses are not case sensitive but the passwords are).  Please email us if you need your password reset.  If you contact us with issues, please identify if you are having trouble getting into your child's gmail or Google Classroom.  Sending us a screenshot of what you are seeing is helpful for us to see as well.

P.E./Wellness:  Ask your child about the book we read today called "Stick and Stone".  We talked about the do's and don'ts of being a good friend.  A link to the story:
