Our Week:

We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Fall break!

Morning Ignite:

The Grades 1 and 2 students are being very creative these days with our morning Ignite centres. We are also seeing that the children are practicing their collaborative and problem solving skills when playing with others.

Literacy:

Glacier and Sunrise started The Daily 4 in Literacy this week. We have been working hard on what Read to Self and Read to Someone looks and feels like so The Daily 4 has been a time to work on four different Literacy areas: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Ask your child about the new word work games they played this week.

Math:

The grade 1's have been working on recognizing quantities to ten with the tens frame. When looking at square counters placed on a tens frame, our question has been "What number do you see and how do you know?" The Grade 2's continue to work on counting forwards by 1's within a 1000 by starting at any number. They continue to further their understanding of place value by looking at base ten blocks.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Learning Conferences next week!

What is your robot's name?

What does your robot look like?

What does your robot do that is special?

How can your robot adapt and change?

How is your robot helpful?

Ask your child what the baby's name is for our grade one Roots of Empathy Program.

Art: We started a new project around our zones of regulation and thinking/imagination brains.  Ask your child about their art piece.  We will continue to work on this project for the next few weeks.

Friday Nov. 3, 2023

Important Information/Dates:

-November 8th last day before fall break, classes resume November 15th

-Please bring in non-perishable food items for the Veterans Food Bank next week.

-If you have any Winter clothing your child has grown out of or no longer needs, please bring in items to donate to the Jacket Racket donation program.

Our Week:

Wellness: Ask your child about the Zones of Regulation. We have looked at the green and blue zones so far and have talked about emotions connected with those zones. Both classes created thought prints in their visual journals to explore these ideas.

Math: Mrs. Pelton's grade 1 group continues to practice skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's. Ask your child about the tens frame game "Twenty" we played this week. The students were asked to state the number they placed on the tens frame board as well as find out how many more they needed to make twenty.

Ms. Disher's grade 2 group continues to skip count by using coins. They  worked on counting by 10's from 100 to 200 and counting by 25's from 25 to 200. They also played different place value games to reinforce understanding.

Writing: Both classes read the book The Skull, written by Jon Klassen. The students wrote about what their favourite part was from the book and why. We are continuing to work on the important parts of writing a sentence: capitals at the beginning, finger spaces between words, and periods at the ending. They are encouraged to stretch out the sounds of a word when trying to write words.

Reading: Ask your child about their focus during our morning literacy groups and the Read to Self routine we practice daily.
