 Friday January 26th

Important Dates and Information:

Swimming starts Monday:

-We leave the school at 9:05 a.m. SHARP.  We cannot wait for students as the bus needs to leave right away.

-Please send your child to school with their bathing suit under their clothes as well as a smaller separate swim bag with a towel and underwear in it.

-Send goggles if your child needs them.

-We will not be at the school during our morning snack time as we will be swimming.  It is important that your child eat a good breakfast and bring a snack to school that they can eat before 9:00 in the classroom OR after we get back from the pool.  The bus leaves to take us back to school at 10:45 so we will not be back until close to lunch.

Our Week:

Grade 1 Roots of Empathy: Ask your child what they learned about baby Mario!

Grade 2 The Wild Robot Project and Coding: If your child finished their robot then they have been sent home.  We will finish the rest next week.  Coding: The Grade 2's are learning about coding using the Sphero Robots.  It is an important part of the Grade 1 and 2 Science (Computer Science) curriculum.  The Grade 2's will be teaching the Grade 1's how to use the Sphero Robots.  If your child is in Grade 2, ask them what they did this week!

Mrs. Pelton's Class: They have been working on a writing and loose parts project for our class read aloud, The Wild Robot.  Ask your child what they have done so far!

Ms. Disher's Class: Ask your child about what we read and drew today for The Wild Robot.  Ask your child about their "How to" writing.  For example, each student started their drawings and sentences with 4 words: First, Next, Then, Last.  This also ties into the Science outcomes for coding where students have to be able to give directions and use directions to create something.

Math: We are working on equality/inequality and addition/subtraction.  Ask your Grade 1 child what they did this week with Mrs. Pelton.  Ask your Grade 2 child what they did with Ms. Disher (hint: YOU Be The Teacher! What does the equal sign mean?-it's not just about where the answer goes!)

Have a fantastic weekend!

 Jan 19, 2024

Important Information and Dates:

Grade 1s have Roots of Empathy two times next week (Tues and Thurs)

Lacrosse starts next week

Grade 1s continue to work hard on their government testing for reading and mathematics

Swimming is from Jan 29 - Feb 1- please contact your classroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns

Our Week;

In math, the grade 1s have started to work on addition. To get them thinking about addition, we have been engaging in different games. Ask your child about Race to 100 and Bump it. The grade 2s have been continuing equality/inequality, reviewing single digit addition strategies and doubles and focusing on fact families.

In literacy, we have been looking closely at the characters in the Wild Robot- understanding who are the main characters and what are the personality traits of each character. We continue to enjoy drawing, discussing, predicting, inferring and questioning while we read. The students have many wonderful insights and connections to share. Ask your child what Roz did to help the animals on the island stay warm.

The grade 2s, on Thursday, had the opportunity to play with the Sphero Indi Robots that are new to EHS. We are starting to talk about coding (plugged and unplugged) as part of the computer science curriculum. The students were very excited to try out the robots and in the future they will be able to share what they have learned with the grade 1s.

We had another week of cold weather, but next week looks warmer. Please ensure your child comes to school with snow pants as there is lots of snow on the school grounds to play in. Have a great weekend!
