Our Week:

On Wednesday Feb. 14, we had an enjoyable sharing of Valentine’s Day cards and we also talked about what friendship means. For Social Studies, we are talking about all the people that make up the community of Tuscany and friends are an important group of people that are in our school community as well as in our neighborhood community. We will continue to look at the community of Tuscany in different ways in the next while.

For literacy, Ms. Disher’s class focused on understanding setting in story while writing about The Wild Robot and Ms. Pelton’s class has started procedural/how to writing. Both classes will continue this next week.

For math, Mrs. Pelton’s grade 1 group focused on understanding addition through the part-part-whole model and continued to play math addition games to reinforce skills learned. Ms. Disher’s grade 2 group continued to work on addition and subtraction of 2 digit by one digit numbers. The students played a fun Snakes and Ladders game to practice this skill.

Both classes continued to work on different parts of our science and art project about hibernation, adaptation and migration. The students are super excited to learn more about the different animals we have been reading about in The Wild Robot. Ms. Disher’s class has begun the second book in the series: The Wild Robot Escapes. Mrs. Pelton’s class is nearing the end of The Wild Robot.

We hope everyone has a wonderful Family Day long weekend!

-Grade 1 Math Group: focused on adding as joining together 2 groups of objects, pictures, etc.  They also focused on word problems that involve addition of numbers up to 20.

-Grade 2 Math Group: focused on addition with 3 addends and addition/subtraction of a 2 digit number and a 1 digit number.  For example, solving 64+3, 64-4, 10+5+5, how can we solve these equations?  (hint: making groups of ten, making ten, using place value, counting up, counting back, finding patterns in numbers)

-Thursday February 8th was our last day for literacy groups.  We will start up with new groups in 2 weeks.  Ask your child what they did in their group and who their teacher was.

Important Dates and Information:

Valentines Day is coming up: If your child chooses to partake in giving Valentine Day cards to students, we ask that you have enough to give one to each student in the class. If you wish to give Valentines cards to students in another class, you are not expected to give one to everyone in that other class. Please ensure the name of the student is on the card. We ask there to please be no food or candy due to food preferences, allergies and culture. A paper letter and a list of names in your child's class will be sent home next week.

Teachers Convention Feb. 15 and 16- no school

Family Day Feb. 19- no school

Fun Snack Feb. 8- Tim Horton's

Our Week:

We had a wonderful week swimming. The students had the chance to learn new skills and be brave for trying something new if it was their first time. Ask your child what they enjoyed most about swimming.

In literacy, Ms. Disher's class continued to work on the "How to" writing they have been working on and Mrs. Pelton's class worked on their loose parts writing project. We will be sending home a piece of writing next week to share your child's progress in writing.

The grade 1s worked with the grade 2s to explore and do challenges with the Sphero Robots. There is so much learning and fun to be had with these little cars. Ask your child how they make the Shpero Robots move how they want them to move.

In math, the students continue to work on addition and subtraction. Ms. Disher's grade 2 group learned about 2 digit by one digit adding and subtracting and Mrs. Pelton's grade 1 group learned how to use a number path when adding two numbers between 0 and 20 together.

We have began an art and science project focusing on hibernation and migration. We read about these topics in the book the Wild Robot so now it's exciting to look at this in more depth. Ask your child the two kinds of art mediums we used in our winter scene piece we started.

We hope you have a restful weekend!
