 Friday March 22nd

Important Dates and Reminders:

-Have a great spring break!  School starts back up Tuesday April 2nd.

-Please see the EHS connect on the school website for important information and updates.

-Please return blue folders once you have had the chance to look at the work inside.  February we sent home a writing sample and March we sent home some math.  April we will send another sample of your child's work.

Our Week (was short but lots of great stuff!):

-Ask your child what happened in our Wild Robot Escapes book 2.  We are excited that a movie is coming out in the fall!

-Math: Grade 1's are working on learning about 1/2 and Grade 2's are learning about 1/4, 1/6, 1/8 and 1/10.  Both grades are working on the understanding that fractions involve dividing/sharing/partitioning into equal pieces or groups.  Below are some great stories and resources about fractions and what we are learning:

-Science and Social Studies:  We are moving away from our community unit in Social Studies to start some Science after spring break!

Have a great Spring Break!

Student Led Conference March 21 and 22

Eric Harvie School will be hosting our student-led conferences the evening of Thursday March 21 and the morning of Friday March 22. This round of conferences will be 21student-led and will provide each learner a chance to show what they have learned as well as provide time for families to engage with the classroom teachers. Families will be asked to sign up for a 30 minute time block to allow for ample time for students to show-off their learning, and as well to provide time for conversation.

The Sign-up for conferences will open Saturday March 16th at 8:00 am and close on Wednesday March 20th at 4:00 pm. Please sign up for a 30 minute time slot under your child’s team of teachers.

Please bring back blue home folders.

Upcoming Scholastic Book Fair- March 20-22

March 21 Subway Fun Lunch

Mon, Mar 25 - Mon, Apr. 1: Spring Break- NO SCHOOL, classes resume Tues, April 2

Our Week:

We had a wonderful time at Telus Spark on Monday. The students were fully engaged in learning and exploring various aspects of science. Ask your child what they enjoyed the most.

In literacy, both classes worked on writing about their experience at Telus Spark which they will share with you at Learning Conferences.

Ms. Disher’s grade 2 math group and Mrs. Pelton’s grade 1 math group began learning about fractions this week. Learning new vocabulary about fractions is important. Ask your child what a whole and a half are. How many halves make up a whole? Both groups will continue working on addition and subtraction as we learn new math concepts.

The community walk down to The Tuscany Club was fun and it was nice to have no ice on the side walks! Ask your child why The Tuscany Club and the shopping center area is located in the middle of Tuscany.

We look forward to talking with you at Learning Conferences and having the opportunity for the students to share all their hard work.

-Thank you to everyone for returning their field trip forms for Monday's trip to Telus Spark.  Please refer to the letter that went home regarding what to bring for the trip (i.e. dress for the weather, pack a lunch, snack and water).  The bus will be leaving at 8:35 SHARP from the school.

-Blue Folders: a March sample of work went home in your child's blue folder today if they were at school.  The work is for current Math learning and has a reflection page attached to it with the learning outcomes your child has been working on. Your child has also shared "2 Stars" (things they do well) and "1 Wish" (something they wish to get better at/work on).  The work is yours to keep.  Please return the blue folder.

Community Walks both Sunrise and Glacier classes- Friday March 8 and Friday March 15 from 10:45-11:30am. Please refer to the School Messenger email that was sent out for more information.

Our Week:

For literacy Ms. Disher's students shared their Wild Robot setting writing with each other. Their loose part Wild Robot art pieces turned out very well. Mrs. Pelton's class continued to work on procedural writing.

In math, the grade 1 students focused on learning about subtraction as taking away and looked at the friendly numbers of 10 with subtraction. We learned that addition goes hand in hand with subtraction because if you know that 4 + 6 = 10, then you know that 10- 4= 6.  The grade 2 students worked on thinking of addition for subtraction and vice versa to help with missing addends/subtrahends.

For Pink Shirt Day on Feb. 28, both classes watched the wordless picture book on the Smartboard I Walk with Vanessa written by Kerascoët. The students engaged in conversations about kindness, empathy and inclusion. For Wellness the rest of the week, we continued our talk about kindness by reading and writing about what a true friend is all about and thinking of powerful positive words to write with pastel.

For Social Studies, we continued to look closely at Tuscany community and started to learn about the word landmark and where the landmarks in Tuscany are located.

Have a good weekend everyone!
