April 26, 2024

Important Dates and Information:

Please return blue communication folders if you have not already. We will be sending them home again soon.

Fri, May 17: Non instructional day- No school

Mon, May 20: Holiday - School Closed

Coulee School: June 3 to 6, Tues the 4, we will be going all day and will be needing one parent volunteer from Glacier and Sunrise

Our Week:

Congratulations on a fantastic assembly performance today for all of Glacier and Sunrise! We have been working hard this past week making sure everything was just right to share. The students love the story of the Wild Robot and we think it’s wonderful that there has been so much learning happening all around one story!

In Math, the Grade 1s have been looking at equality and inequality (understanding that the equals sign means a “balance.” We have been exploring with cuisenaire coloured  rods and a pan balance to understand this concept. Ask your Grade 2 child about their fraction avenue project they worked on this past week.

Our Social Studies/Coding project has been going well. There are many layers to this project so we are immersing ourselves in quite an extensive inquiry. Ask your child what they just completed in their communities. Hint: what are the different buildings that make up their community? We are moving onto the math (measurement) part of the project soon.

Yesterday, we shared a box with everyone with the words, “Urgent, Precious Cargo Inside, Protect from Heat and Cold,” on the outside. The students were asked to make a prediction of what they thought was in the box. Today, we revealed that we have caterpillars that we will be taking care of so they can turn into butterflies. There will be lots of learning involved with this as we observe the changes that occur. We are excited to get started making sketches and doing some writing around this.

Have a fun and safe weekend!

 Friday April 19th

My apologies for the late post and we usually post on Fridays and it is now Sunday.

Important Dates and Reminders:

-Return all library books after 2 weeks, return them if your child wants to keep them longer and we can renew it for them.  We have Mrs. Carde our librarian emailing us about a lot of overdue books.

-Return all book communication folders so we can send a new writing sample of your child's work home by the end of the month.

-Glacier and Sunrise's assembly is this coming Friday April 26th starting at 9:30 to about 10:15.  We hope you can join us.

Our Week:

-We have been working hard on preparing for our assembly.  Ask your child what we have been working on and what group they belong to (hint: singing with Mrs. Coulson: Oh What a Wonderful World, creating art and poems with Ms. Disher, creating a dance/creative movement and acting piece with Mrs. Pelton).

-Math: Both groups continue to work on addition and subtraction as well as the basics of fractions.  Grade one is working on the concept of one half while grade 2 continues with unit fractions up to one tenth.  Grade 2 is learning to write fractions or equal partitions of groups or shapes in various ways: 1/2, one half, 2 equal parts, etc.

-Writing: Grade One and Two are working on acrostic poems as per curriculum expectations and will be working in the future on rhyming couplets.  Kids have been practicing acrostic poems using their names and characters from our class read aloud, The Wild Robot.

-Reading:  We are taking a break from our round 3 literacy groups to reassess how students are doing before we regroup again for round 4.  All groups have been working overall on reading fluency and comprehension.

Have a fantastic night!

 Important Dates and Information:

Friday April 19- Non Instructional Day, no school

Friday April 26- Peace Assembly Disher/Pelton Classes, 9:30 am and finishing between 10 to 10:15 am

Mrs. Pelton’s Grade 1 acting/drama groups took home their lines for their parts. Please practice these lines with your child at home.

Return blue folders. We will be sending home another piece of writing at the end of April

Our Week:

Both classes have been working hard on the different pieces for the assembly. The students are excited to share their work with everyone. The assembly is all about our learning with the book The Wild Robot. Ask your child what pieces they will be a part of. Hint: MC speaking, drama/acting, dance, poetry, visual art and music/singing.

In Math, Ms. Disher’s Grade 2 group finished up their ice cream sundae fraction math and Mrs. Peloton’s Grade 1 Group worked on missing quantities in subtraction and addition, less or more (with 1 and 10) and understanding that when we share a quantity equally we need to have the same number.

We continue to work on our Social Studies/Coding project. The students have been very engaged and creative in creating their own community with different names for their places etc. They have enjoyed coding their Indi robot cars to drive down their roads and have been good problem solvers when they need to make a change when something doesn’t work how they planned.

Have a wonderful weekend in the sun!
