 Friday May 31

Important Information/Reminders:

-return all blue folders so we can send a new work sample home next week

-Coulee School starts next week.  Mrs. Pelton and I have sent a schoolmessenger with important and updated information

-June 27th last day of school

-check the School Connect weekly messages for further information/updates

Our Week:

-ask your child about Roots of Empathy (Grade 1 only)

-ask your child what is happening in The Wild Robot Protects, book 3 of the series

-today the Grade 3/4 team had their assembly (was fantastic!), ask your child about it

-Glacier Group/Ms. Disher's group has really been into dominoes and building, if any of you have dominoes you are willing to part with/donate, we would love to have more.  Sunrise Group is also starting to get into this.

-Math: Mrs. Pelton's group is finishing up measurement and Ms. Disher's Grade 2 group has moved onto geometry-learning about 2D shapes and 3D objects.  Most Grade 2's know a lot already, so we have moved onto some challenge tasks so they can apply what they know already about geometry.  For example, build a structure with 3D objects that has 5 flat faces, 10 flat faces, 30 edges or 50 vertices.

-Ask your child what they are doing for Inquiry/Social Studies: both groups have chosen to look at several parks and natural spaces in 3 identified Canadian Communities to learn more about animals, landforms, human interactions to see how they are all connected.  We will be comparing and contrasting this with the Coulee as a natural feature of the earth's surface-a landform!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Important Dates and Information:

Coulee School:

We have Coulee School from June 3rd to June 6th. We are looking for one volunteer from each class (Glacier and Sunrise) to help out. We will be sending out a School messenger message with the schedule this week. Please email/contact Mrs. Pelton (Sunrise Group) or Ms. Disher (Glacier Group) if you can join us.

Check the weekly Connect newsletter for up to date information and dates, including our celebration of learning on June 14th.

Return blue folders that went home. We will be sending home a math sample next.

Our Week:

For math, ask your child what they have been learning about in measurement. The grade 1 students have been comparing the height and width of different objects and have been talking about what the word distance means.

In literacy, both classes have been focusing on what a noun, verb and an adjective are and practicing writing sentences with them. Knowing this helps the students understand how to write a good and interesting sentence.

Mrs. Pelton’s class is getting to the end of The Wild Robot Escapes and Ms. Disher’s class is continuing to read The Wild Robot Protects. The students make many good personal connections to the stories and love to share their predictions as to what they think will happen next.

In Social Studies, we have started learning about different communities in Canada. Sunrise has started talking about Saskatoon and the prairies and Glacier has been looking at Meteghan in eastern Canada. The students have enjoyed looking at the map and looking up the weather in those parts and comparing the temperatures to Calgary. Ask your child what is a landform and what kind of landforms there are in Saskatoon and Meteghan.

Have a wonderful weekend! We hope your families can get outside and enjoy Spring!

-We have Coulee School from June 3 to June 6th.  We are looking for one volunteer from each class (Glacier and Sunrise).  We will send out a schedule of when both classes are going to the Coulee next week.  It will be a mix of half days and a full day.  We are going on the full day Tuesday June 4th so we will need 2 volunteers for the day.  Please email/contact Mrs. Pelton (Sunrise Group) or Ms. Disher (Glacier Group) if you can join us.

-No school Monday May 20th

-check the weekly connect newsletter for up to date information and dates, including our celebration of learning on June 14th

-return blue folders with the writing sample that went home over the last 2 weeks, we will be sending home a math sample at the end of May

Our Week:

-Inquiry (Science and S.S.): Both groups released our painted lady butterflies this week.  Ask your child about their experience with this.  We have been learning about their life cycle, how to make scientific observations and the difference between facts and opinions.  We are starting to look at Canadian communities in S.S.

-Math: Ask your child what they have been doing in their Math Group.  Grade 2's are continuing to work on Measurement (standard and non-standard units of measure) and especially learning how to use a ruler to measure/compare objects in centimeters.

-Literacy: We continue to collect weekly writing samples to see how your child is progressing.  The outcomes that went home with the April blue folder list the main outcomes expected for Grade 1 and 2.  Students in both grades should be writing complete sentences, writing several sentences in a logical sequence starting with a topic sentence.  We expect kids to be able to write and draw for reasonable amounts of time (about 15 minutes at a time).

The Wild Robot Book Series: Glacier Group has now moved onto the 3rd book in the series: The Wild Robot Escapes.  Ask your child in Sunrise Group where they are at in book 2.

Have a fantastic weekend!

-Coulee School week of June 3rd to June 7th.  We are looking for parent volunteers.  If you can join us for any of those dates, please let Mrs. Pelton or myself know.

Our Week:

Inquiry: We continue to watch as our caterpillars have now changed to their chrysalis form, stage 3 of their life cycle.  Kids are excited to do observations in their Nature Journals.  Ask you child about the questions/wonderings they have, what they have learned about Painted Lady Butterfly life cycles and any facts they have learned.

Math: Ask your child what they are doing in their Math group.  Both Grade 1's and 2's are working on learning about measurement-using both standard and non-standard units of measure.

Literacy: We did another writing sample that has gone home in blue folders.  Sunrise group is working on story retelling using the book, It Fell From The Sky.  Glacier group is working on parts of speech (nouns and verbs).  Glacier group was quite excited to learn about a book called The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsberg.  We looked at the pictures, titles for each picture and read the captions. We then did a piece of writing about one of the pictures: What do you see happening?  What do you think will happen next? etc.  The book is a real mystery!  Ask your child more.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Mon, May 20: Holiday - School Closed

Coulee School: June 3 to 6, Tues the 4, we will be going all day and will be needing one parent volunteer from Glacier and Sunrise.

Our Week:

In literacy we have been talking about story elements as we read The Wild Robot Escapes and other picture books. Ask your child about what the setting, characters and main problems of The Wild Robot Escapes are.

In math, both Ms. Disher’s Grade 2 group and Mrs. Pelton’s Grade 1 group have wrapped up fractions and will be moving onto measurement. The Social Studies/Coding project incorporates some measurement using non-standard units (Grade 1) and standard units (Grade 2) which we will be doing more of.

The students in both Glacier and Sunrise were very excited to look at the caterpillars with magnifying glasses this week. We drew in our new nature journals by looking closely and drawing what we see, not what we think we see. Many good questions and observations have come out of this. As we see the changes occurring, we have been learning about the butterfly life cycle through videos, online material and books. Ask your child what the webbing or silk that the caterpillars have made is for.

For the Social Studies/Coding project, the students will have a chance to present their work with their partner to the class. It’s interesting to find out why buildings are put in certain places and why the landmark they chose to create is important to their community.

Hope everyone can get outdoors this weekend!
