 Friday December 22

Important Information and Dates:

Thank you for those who contributed to Families helping Families. It was a great success!

Check the Google Classroom for activities, resources, etc.

Raz Kids is a great way to keep up with the reading over break

Classes start Monday January 8th after the winter break

Our Week:

In Math this week, the Grade 1 and 2 students learned about how to gather data and then transfer that information into two different kinds of graphs: a pictograph and a bar graph. Ask your child about who their favourite character is from the Wild Robot. We started to graph the results.

In literacy, we continue to work on how to write a proper sentence and have been focusing on making sure our sentences all relate to one topic. Drawing a four part picture plan has been helping the students with this.

For our Social Studies Inquiry on community, the students have been working on a rough copy of their family portraits. They have been thinking about how they can draw the face in a realistic way. Trying something new and learning some new drawing techniques has been a good challenge. We are going to start the final copy after the break.

We hope everyone has a safe and restful holiday season. See you in 2024!

This Week:

Both Sunrise and Glacier continue to work on writing stamina during journal writing. This week, Sunrise was given the prompt “If I had a superpower it would be…” and Glacier was given the prompt  “I want to tell you about…” and “My favorite game is…” We also worked on making sure our sentences relate to these topics instead of diverting into new ideas.

In math, the grade 1’s continue to work on understanding place value with ones and tens in two digit numbers. We have played games and worked with base ten blocks to explore this concept. The grade 2’s have been working on expanded form when looking at three digit numbers. For example the number 483 can be written as 400+80+3= 483. They have been engaging in “What’s My Number” and Number of the Day to explore and dive deeper into number concepts.

Both classes have begun a new and exciting Social Studies inquiry about community. We asked the students the question “What makes your community of Tuscany a good place to live?” The students worked in groups to draw and label on large chart paper what makes up the community of Tuscany. They came up with some excellent ideas. The schools, family, friends, people caring for one another, the fire station, the duck pond were just a few ideas. We have started to focus on all the different people who make up different communities. This past week, we started to look at our family communities and what that looked like. We did some guided drawing practice where we focused on drawing realistic heads, necks, eyes, and lips. The students’ will soon use their new face drawing skills to create a family portrait.

Congratulations to the choir students for their wonderful performances on Thursday afternoon and evening! The performers displayed much enthusiasm that was enjoyed by all!

 Friday December 1st

Important Information and Dates:

-send your child's Home Reading folder back when they are ready for a new book

-Library book exchange is Tuesdays and Thursdays

-Families Helping Families-it will be sent via School Messenger as it can't be attached to the blog message.  It is voluntary.

-No school December 8th

Our Week:

-Ask your child what they did in Wellness today with Mrs. Watterson (hint: the group plan, picnics).

-Ask your child about what has happened next our Read Aloud, The Wild Robot.  Ask your child who Chitchat is and who is Brightbill.

-We have Roots of Empathy next week with the Grade 1's.  The Grade 2's will continue to work on their robot projects...ask them about their designs and what makes their robot special or helpful to others.  We could use small boxes to help with our building.  If you have any boxes smaller than a shoe box that we can have, please send them to school with your child.

-Journal Writing:  Both groups are working on building stamina-being able to write/draw for 15 minutes.  Today Mrs. Pelton's group wrote about places in the world they would like to go.  They shared their work.  Ms. Disher's class wrote about what they were excited about (i.e. hockey tournament, Christmas, vacation, birthdays).  Ask your child what they wrote about today.

Math: We continue to work on numeracy as that is such a foundation leading to other math concepts.  Grade 2's are using base ten blocks to make numbers with groups of hundreds, tens and ones.  Check the Google classroom for a game to give you a better idea.  Grade 1's are starting to work with these blocks for groups of tens and ones.

Have a fantastic weekend!
